Jacopo Tintoretto
The Vision of Ezekiel

1577-78
Oil on canvas, 260 x 104 in. (660 x 265 cm.)
Upper Hall
Scuola Grande di San Rocco, Venice

The ceiling of the Upper Hall features images of Old Testament events that are related typologically to events in the New Testament, which are pictured on the walls. In this case, Ezekiel's vision of the dry bones (Ezekiel 37:1-14) relates to the Resurrection and the Ascension.

In the upper register, God is pictured upside-down but lifting his left arm as he instructs Ezekiel to prophesy. In the middle Ezekiel stands among the dry bones and does so, and in the bottom register two living men are already taking form.
